Laurelie Rae: Teaching Artist in Istanbul

 

Laurelie Rae is a teaching artist, living and making art in Istanbul since 2014. Rae completed her master's degree in 2016 at the U.K.'s Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts before moving to Istanbul to continue her academic and practical studies of traditional and contemporary art. Her areas of interest are Islamic ceramics, drawing and illustration. She is an author and museum education consultant who specializes in traditional and Islamic art methods and techniques. She is the author of "Islamic Art & Architecture: Memories of Seljuk & Ottoman Masterpieces". In 2019 she completed her second master’s degree in Visual Art and Communication Design at Sabanci University, where she explored contemporary Art and Art History.

 Laurelie uses her love of traditional ceramic imagery and combines them with contemporary illustration and ceramic works that deal with contemporary issues such as her ongoing project of Female Muslim travelers and West African Islamic Art.

She gives workshops in London, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Toronto, Montreal and Istanbul. During this pandemic period her online classes have been sought after and warmly received by institutions globally drawing large numbers of participants for each session.

She is currently working on her second publication, Surface Patterns- Motifs from Islamic Lands. This book is a topical compilation of the motifs found within sacred and secular Islamic Art.
